At Starcroft Fiber Mill, we gently wash the Nash Island fleeces in biodegradable soaps to remove grease, dirt and the occasional bit of seaweed or sea shells. The cleaned fibers are then machine-carded into roving for handspinning. We hand-dye the roving using a special dying method that creates a variegated color. When spun up and knitted or woven, the multi-toned roving creates a fabric with light and dark highlights playing on a single color, which is quite beautiful. For the adventuresome dyer, we also carry Nash Island Roving in natural pure white. |
